Full description

Embark on an exhilarating one-day tour to Tunari Mountain, immersing yourself in its awe-inspiring beauty and breathtaking landscapes. The adventure begins as we depart early from Cochabamba in our private 4×4 vehicle, leaving the city behind and venturing into the rural countryside. The scenery transforms from semi-tropical to mountainous as we gradually ascend from the 2500 meters of Cochabamba.

Our approximately 2-hour drive takes us along winding mountain tracks, offering magnificent views of the city below. As we enter the mountain area, the landscape transitions to a high-altitude terrain, characterized by jagged rocks, peaks, and roaming packs of llamas.

Arriving at Lake Macho, nestled at an altitude of around 4500 meters, we pause to refresh ourselves with a traditional drink called “api.” This warming beverage, made from purple corn, invigorates us and provides the perfect energy boost before our trek.

Setting foot on the winding mountain trails, we soon feel the effects of the altitude as we ascend. However, our efforts are rewarded when we reach a beautiful sheltered lake area, where the trail levels out momentarily, allowing us to catch our breath and rejuvenate. Keep a watchful eye for the magnificent condors soaring above, a truly unforgettable sight. Additionally, the area may grant us the chance to spot the elusive vicuñas, the smallest and most timid of Bolivia’s four camelids.

Continuing our steady climb, we traverse rocky terrains, though nothing overly technical. Regular breaks are included to admire the surrounding mountain ranges, catch our breath, and marvel at the small fossil shells that can be found along the way. This region boasts one of the world’s richest concentrations of fossils, making every step an opportunity for fascinating discoveries.

After approximately 3 hours, we reach the peak at 5035 meters, treated to an awe-inspiring view of the Cochabamba valley below. On clear days, we may even glimpse the distant Illimani mountain, providing an unparalleled panoramic vista. Here, we savor our packed lunch, resting and relishing the magnificent scenery. During colder weather, we adjust our stay accordingly, descending to a lower, more sheltered area for our meal.

Our descent follows a different trail, initially navigating rocky scree trails that offer a thrill as we slide down. Along this route, we encounter diverse geology and encounter incredible fossils embedded in the rocks. Keen eyes may also spot the agile vizcachas, rabbit-like creatures hidden among the rocky landscape.

The return trek is quicker as we make our way down, granting us the opportunity to pause and admire the lake once again, dipping our feet into its cold waters before continuing our journey back to the vehicle. The return time varies based on the group’s pace, but typically falls between 17:00 and 19:00, ensuring a fulfilling day of adventure and exploration.
